Getting Through It: A Practical Take on Overcoming Depression

There was a time when I felt disconnected from myself. I was constantly tired, unmotivated, and distant from the things I once enjoyed.
Looking back, it all began after a personal experience that left me feeling uncertain and unsettled. I didn’t talk about it much because, honestly, I didn’t know how. But I knew something wasn’t right. Over time, that feeling turned into a quiet sadness I couldn’t shake.
At first, I hoped it would pass on its own. But when it didn’t, I started looking for small ways to regain some sense of control, taking things one step at a time.
Here’s what helped me:

Establishing a routine. A consistent wake-up time, making my bed, and setting small tasks helped bring structure when everything else felt uncertain.

Moving my body. Light exercise or simply stretching gave me a sense of control over my space and energy.

Opening up. Eventually, I confided in someone I trusted. I didn’t need advice, just a listening ear. That alone made a difference.

Finding small moments of calm. Whether it was a good cup of coffee, a favorite show, or journaling, these moments reminded me that joy was still possible.

Being patient with myself. I stopped expecting immediate change. Some days were tough, but I showed up for myself, even if just in small ways.
What I went through had an impact, but it didn’t define me. If you’re facing something similar, remember that healing doesn’t always happen quickly. Often, it’s a gradual and personal process.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. Start with one small step today. Then try again tomorrow.

Real Talk: Tips on Managing Your Mental Health
Let’s be honest, we know that life gets overwhelming. Between work deadlines, personal responsibilities, and everything in between, our mental health often takes a backseat. I’ve been there too smiling on the outside while quietly struggling inside. But over time, I’ve learned that taking care of your mental well-being isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. So today, I want to share a few personal tips that have helped me navigate the ups and downs. Maybe they’ll help you, too.
1. Talk it out—even when it’s hard
There were moments when I felt like no one would understand, so I kept everything bottled up. But opening up to a trusted friend, a fellow JCI member, or even a counselor made all the difference. Talking doesn’t always fix everything, but it lifts the weight off your shoulders and reminds you you’re not alone.
2. Create a safe space for yourself
For me, that’s a quiet corner with a book and a cup of tea. For you, it might be journaling, walking in nature, or just listening to music. Whatever helps you reset make time for it. That sacred “me-time” is more powerful than you think.
3. Focus on small wins
Some days, just getting out of bed is an accomplishment. Celebrate that. I used to be so hard on myself for not doing enough, but learning to appreciate small victories helped me shift my mindset and give myself grace.
4. Practice gratitude
This one’s simple but transformative. Every night, I write down three things I’m thankful for, no matter how small. It could be a warm meal, a message from a friend, or just surviving a tough day. Gratitude grounds us. It brings light even on the darkest days.
5. Stay connected
One thing I love about being part of JCI Alabang is the genuine sense of community. Whether it’s during Ketchup Time or through our Grey Matters page, knowing you’re surrounded by people who care makes all the difference. Don’t isolate yourself reach out, show up, and let others in.
6. Ask for help when you need it
This took me the longest to learn. But strength isn’t always about holding it together it’s about knowing when to lean on others. Whether it’s a mental health professional, a support group, or a loved one, asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do.
Final Thoughts
Taking care of your mental health is a journey, not a destination. There will be good days and tough ones but every step you take toward healing and self-awareness matters. Be kind to yourself. You’re doing better than you think.
And always remember: within JCI Alabang, you are seen, supported, and never alone.
