The Global Goals For Sustainable Devlopment

A global roadmap for change

17 Goals to Transform Our World

The Sustainable Development Goals call on all countries—poor, rich, and middle-income—to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They link ending poverty with economic growth and addressing social needs such as education, health, social protection, and jobs, while tackling climate change. Today, they also provide a vital framework for COVID-19 recovery.

Understanding the purpose and impact of the SDGs.

Background on the goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established at the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro to address urgent environmental, political, and economic challenges. Replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the SDGs continue the global effort to end poverty, hunger, and inequality, while promoting education, health, and sustainable development. All 17 goals are interconnected: progress in one area supports success in others, from climate action and gender equality to peace, inclusive societies, and economic growth. The SDGs are a global commitment to leave no one behind and build a sustainable, safe, and prosperous future for all.

No Poverty

To end poverty, everyone should have basic healthcare, security and education.

Zero Hunger

Globally, one in nine people are undernourished. This goal aims to end hunger.

Good Health & Well-Being

Ensuring people live healthy lives can cut child mortality and raise life expectancy.

Quality Education

The UN wants everyone to have access to inclusive, equitable quality education.

Gender Equality

Gender equality is a human right, and is vital for a peaceful, prosperous world.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Clean water protects people from disease, yet three in 10 people lack access to it.

Affordable and Clean Energy

Targets for 2030 include using more renewable, affordable energy.

Economic Growth

The aim is for sustainable economic growth and decent employment for all.

Industry and Infrastructure

This involves building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation.

Reduced Inequality

The poorest 40 percent of the population should be able to grow their income faster than average.

Communities

The UN wants to increase affordable housing and make settlements inclusive, safe and sustainable.

Responsible Consumption

This goal aims to foster eco-friendly production, reduce waste and boost recycling.

Climate Action

Urgent action is needed, by regulating emissions and promoting renewable energy.

Life Underwater

The aim is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources

Life on Land

To stop degradation, we must preserve forest, desert and mountain ecosystems.

Peace & Justice

The aim is inclusive societies with strong institutions that provide justice for all.

Partnership for the Goals

If all countries are to achieve the goals, international cooperation is vital.

The 17 Global Goals

These Global Goals' aim is for all countries to work together to ensure no one is left behind.
