I AM AUSOME: A Webinar on the Inclusion and Diversity of Individuals on the Spectrum
By: Nina Liganor
I am Ausome, a fittingly entitled webinar organized by the chapter, celebrated inclusion and diversity of individuals on the autism spectrum. Last April 8, numerous chapters based locally and abroad, all came together in support of this cause.
The webinar was conducted In partnership with Mighty Little Ones (MLO), a therapy center based in Parañaque for children with special needs. Besides providing therapy services, MLO is also making waves in advocating for inclusion and diversity.
The evening began with a talk held by Ms. Anika Haxton, MLO’s co-founder, on promoting true inclusion for individuals on the spectrum. She highlighted awareness as a building block to inclusion – what it is, what it isn’t, common challenges experienced and opportunities to be had. Her talk promoted inclusion for children on the spectrum in schools, public places and the like. She also promoted inclusion for adults who are also in the spectrum through building life skills and employment.
Aside from the talk, the webinar also brought to life actual stories shared by parents and guardians of children with autism. While they all shared challenges in their journey, they each also shared the joys that come with caring for such children. The success of this webinar was even more evident with the clamor to continue this initiative but with a different school this time. This session served as the stepping stone for JCI Alabang to develop this into a continuous project in collaboration with more partners and this paved way for the conception of the Safe Playce Project.
We’re so thrilled to have been able to have the chance to host the I AM AUSOME Webinar which proved to be such a huge success! It was interesting hearing from our speakers, we learned so much about the subject at hand and it was so inspiring hearing about the stories, experiences and tips from those who shared their personal experience. – Nina Liganor
